Housed in the historic Mills Community House, The Benzonia
Public Library has been serving residents of and visitors to Benzie County since
1925.
Lending Library –
The library is open to the public six days per week for
a total of 38 hours. Benzie County residents and property owners are eligible to
get a library card and borrow library materials. Michicard holders and Visiting Patrons
from libraries participating in MeLCAT's Vistiing Patron option are also able to
borrow library materials. The loan period is three weeks. Non resident patrons may
pay a fee in order to obtain a library card and borrowing privileges.
The collection includes over 19,445 items for children and adults including large
print, audio books, music and magazines. The library also participates in a statewide
interlibrary loan program so that all of your information needs can be met.
To apply for a library card, please present your driver's license and, if applicable,
proof of Benzie County property ownership.
Research –
The library has bound, print issues of the Benzie Banner/Record
Patriot dating back to 1888. Benzie County Plat books and cemetery indexes, along
with tombstone photographs are available to use. The Michigan Room houses the Bruce
Catton collection and books about Michigan's rich history or books written by Michigan
authors. Newspaper subscriptions include the Detroit Free Press, the Traverse City
Record Eagle, and the Record Patriot. The staff encourages researchers to use the
Michigan ELibrary to augment the print collection of research materials found in
the building.
Computers and the Internet –
There are four public access computers that have word processing
and spreadsheet software along with broadband access to the Internet. Computer sessions
are 30 minutes in length. In addition, the library provides wireless connectivity
24/7. Even when the library is closed, laptop users are more than welcome to use
WIFI from the porch or parking lot. There are no time limits for wireless users.
Prints from the public computers costs $0.25 per page.
Faxes and Copies –
Need to send a fax or copy a favorite recipe? The library
staff will be happy to assist. Fees for copies are $0.25 per page. Faxes are $2.00
per page.
InterLibrary Loan
The Benzonia Public Library is a member of MeLCat, a statewide library catalog that
allows patrons to search and request a loan of books, audiobooks, tapes, and other
material of interest from ANY Internet connection, any time of day. Requested items
are delivered to the Benzonia Public Library for pickup. Benzonia Public Library
is currently the only library in the area to offer MeLCat services. The MeLCat site
is easy to use. You just need a Benzonia Public Library card. The MeLCat catalog
